Top 5 Health Questions We Get Asked

You may be surprised at the questions and even more surprised about the answers

#1- How Can I Lower My Blood Pressure?

Lowering your blood pressure can often be achieved through various lifestyle changes and holistic interventions. Key strategies include adopting a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while reducing sodium intake. Regular physical activity, such as brisk walking, swimming, or cycling, helps maintain a healthy weight and strengthens the cardiovascular system. Additionally, managing stress through relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation can significantly impact blood pressure levels.

Scott, one of our patients, was having trouble getting his blood pressure under control and he began taking 120Life which is a supplement drink. He noticed an improvement of his high blood pressure to normal levels in just a week after months of trying everything else. I checked out the ingredients and science behind this supplemental drink and it seems like a safe and credible way to lower your blood pressure.

Interestingly, chiropractic care, particularly upper cervical adjustments, has been shown to correlate with decreased blood pressure. A study published in the Journal of Human Hypertension found that patients who received specific chiropractic adjustments experienced significant reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. This non-invasive approach offers a complementary method to traditional treatments, highlighting the importance of a holistic approach to health management.

#2- What’s Causing This Dizziness I’m Experiencing?

Dizziness and vertigo are common symptoms that can significantly impact daily life. The most frequent causes include inner ear disorders, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Meniere's disease, and vestibular neuritis. Additionally, conditions like migraines, dehydration, anxiety, and certain medications can contribute to these sensations. Notably, dizziness and vertigo have been reported as potential side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine and long COVID, according to data from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). To help decrease these symptoms, maintaining good hydration, managing stress, and performing vestibular rehabilitation exercises can be beneficial.

Moreover, chiropractic care, particularly cervical spine adjustments, has been shown to help decrease neurogenic vertigo. 4 studies published in Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research found that chiropractic adjustments can improve vertigo symptoms by addressing misalignments in the cervical spine that affect the nervous system. This highlights chiropractic’s role as a potential solution for reducing dizziness and vertigo symptoms in some patients.

#3- What’s A Healthy Weight and What’s The Best Way To Achieve It?

Achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight is crucial for overall well-being and can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases. A healthy body weight is often defined by a Body Mass Index (BMI) within the range of 18.5 to 24.9, but it's also about how you feel and function daily. We have a BMI scale in the exam room you’re welcome to use to find out what your BMI is. The best way to reach and maintain a healthy weight involves a balanced approach that includes a nutritious diet, regular physical activity, and sustainable lifestyle changes. Our Patient James who has lost 60 lbs. this year is an excellent example of taking a healthy balanced approach to weight loss, implementing the things mentioned in the last sentence.

For example, our own Chiropractic Assistant Kim's husband, Teddy, gained remarkable weight loss success with intermittent fasting. This method involves cycling between periods of eating and fasting. This approach can help regulate insulin levels and promote fat loss without the need for constant calorie counting. Additionally, one of our patients, Lisa, experienced a paradigm shift in her weight loss journey when she embraced the concept that "You can't lose weight to be healthy, you have to be healthy and do healthy things to lose weight." This mindset encourages focusing on overall health and well-being rather than just the number on the scale.

While diets like Keto, Paleo, and plant-based eating are popular today, it's essential to find an approach that works for you and can be maintained as a lifestyle rather than a temporary diet. Consistency and personal preference play significant roles in long-term success.

Finally, a wise piece of advice from our patient’s Nanny Mina is, "When you eat in private, it shows in public," emphasizing the importance of mindful eating habits both when eating out socially and when nobody is watching.

#4- What Causes Hiccups?

Hiccups are those pesky, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm that can strike at the most inconvenient times. They’re usually caused by eating too quickly, drinking carbonated beverages, sudden excitement, or even swallowing air. Your diaphragm spasms, your vocal cords snap shut, and voilà—a hiccup! To get rid of them, people have tried everything from holding their breath and drinking water upside down to being scared by a well-meaning friend. One old trick is to swallow a teaspoon of sugar, which can supposedly tickle the diaphragm back into normal rhythm.

What's grey and wrinkly and jumps every twenty seconds ? An elephant with hiccups! Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.

If all else fails, you can always try this: slowly sip a glass of water while plugging your ears. It’s worth a shot, and if nothing else, you’ll look delightfully silly doing it. And remember, sometimes hiccups are just life’s way of reminding us to take a moment and laugh. A big thank you to our very inquisitive 8-year-old patient for asking this wonderful question in the office! You keep us on our toes—and you brightened our day!

And… #5- How Long Does The Flu Last and What Can I Do To Prevent Getting Sick?

The flu, or influenza, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to hospitalization and even death. The flu typically lasts about one to two weeks, with symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, and fatigue. To ease the symptoms, it's essential to get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, and although I hate to say it, you might want to consider over-the-counter medications for fever and pain relief. Using a humidifier and gargling with salt water can also help alleviate throat discomfort.

I’ve personally followed a routine of taking Vitamin D3 (25) and Zinc (15) with my AG1 every morning and I’ve noticed that my immune response has been stellar! There are great studies on how these two supplements, when taken regularly, can even help boost the immune response and protect you from serious side effects of viruses like Covid as well as the flu. https://c19early.org/d

To strengthen the body's immune system and prevent viral infections like the flu, it's important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, which provide essential nutrients that boost immunity. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and good hygiene practices such as frequent hand washing are also crucial.

Additionally, some studies suggest that chiropractic care can boost the immune response. Chiropractic adjustments can help reduce stress and improve overall body function, which in turn supports the immune system. Research published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics indicates that chiropractic adjustments may enhance immune function by positively influencing the nervous system.
