Be Mindful of What’s on Your Plate: Understanding Potentially Harmful Food Ingredients

In today’s world, maintaining a healthy diet goes beyond just balancing macronutrients – it’s about being vigilant of the quality and safety of the ingredients in the food we consume. Many processed foods in the U.S. contain ingredients that are outright banned in other parts of the world due to their potential harm. As health-conscious individuals, it’s crucial to be informed and intentional about what we’re feeding our families.

Kellogg's Controversy: A Wake-Up Call

Recently, Kellogg’s has come under scrutiny for the ingredients used in its cereals, particularly here in the U.S. Parents are leading a boycott against Kellogg’s, frustrated that the company chooses to use chemicals in American products that are known to have health risks, despite using safer alternatives in European and Canadian versions.

For example, let’s look at Fruit Loops:

Ingredients in Fruit Loops (U.S.)

Artificial Colors: Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1 – linked to hyperactivity, behavioral changes, and potential carcinogenic effects.

BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene): Used as a preservative, this additive is banned in many countries due to its links to cancer risk.

Higher Sugar Content: has been linked to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Ingredients in Fruit Loops (Europe & Canada)

Natural fruit and vegetable extracts for coloring (instead of artificial dyes)

No BHT

Lower sugar content and alternative natural sweeteners

This discrepancy leaves many wondering why these dangerous additives are allowed in the U.S. but banned elsewhere. The short answer? Regulations by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) differ significantly from those in the European Union and Canada.

Common American Foods Banned Overseas

Here are more examples of American foods banned or altered in other countries due to their ingredient list:

Mountain Dew

Contains EDTA,Yellow 5 and High Fructose Corn Syrup- EDTA alone has been linked to diminished calcium levels, headache, nausea, dangerously low blood pressure, kidney failure, organ damage, irregular heartbeat, seizures, or even death.

Little Debbie Swiss Rolls

Includes Yellow 5 and Yellow 6, which are artificial dyes linked to hyperactivity and behavioral issues in children, as well as Polysorbate 60, an emulsifier potentially linked to gut inflammation and cancer.

Skittles

Skittles are not sold in Europe due to the presence of artificial dyes like Yellow 5 and Yellow 6, which are considered potentially harmful and are banned in the EU;

other examples of foods not sold in Europe include certain processed foods containing additives like BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) which are used as preservatives in the US but banned in many European countries.

Questionable Ingredients in American Foods

The FDA permits several additives that other nations have banned, and understanding these ingredients can help you make healthier choices. Here are a few to watch out for:

Propylparaben: Often used in pastries and tortillas, linked to reduced fertility and hormone disruption.

Potassium Bromate: Used in breads to improve texture but banned in multiple countries due to links to kidney and thyroid cancer.

Azodicarbonamide (ADA): Found in bread and bakery products, it’s banned in Europe and Australia due to potential respiratory issues.

Artificial Food Colors (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1): Found in candies, cereals, and sodas, linked to hyperactivity in children and potential carcinogenicity.

High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS): Common in sodas and snacks, associated with obesity, diabetes, and liver disease.

Side Effects to Consider

Many of these chemicals come with documented risks, and while small amounts might not have an immediate effect, cumulative exposure can be concerning. Some potential side effects include:

Hyperactivity and Behavioral Issues: Especially in children, often linked to artificial colors.

Increased Cancer Risk: Associated with preservatives like BHT and potassium bromate.

Allergic Reactions and Inflammation: Certain emulsifiers and additives can trigger gut and immune responses.

Hormone Disruption: Parabens and certain artificial flavors have been shown to interfere with hormone function, particularly in reproductive health.

How to Avoid Harmful Ingredients

Avoiding these ingredients isn’t as hard as it sounds with a few conscious choices:

Opt for Whole Foods – Fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains are free from these harmful additives.

Read Ingredient Labels Carefully – Be wary of food dyes, preservatives, and sweeteners. Even small amounts can add up over time.

Choose Organic and Non-GMO Products – These are often free from artificial additives and preservatives.

Limit Processed Foods – Pre-packaged, heavily processed foods are more likely to contain these ingredients.

Cook at Home – Preparing meals from scratch gives you control over what goes into your food.

At Bright Light Chiropractic, we believe that optimal health comes from feeding your body with whole, nutritious foods and eliminating unnecessary toxins. By paying closer attention to ingredients and advocating for safer food practices, we can protect our families and communities from harmful chemicals.

Discovering Your Best Self: The Life-Changing Power of Regular Chiropractic Care

At Bright Light Chiropractic, we’re here to do more than relieve an ache or pain. We’re here to help you truly live—to bring more joy, energy, and vitality into every part of your life. For many of our patients, scheduling weekly or twice-monthly adjustments has become a powerful tool for maintaining health, resilience, and well-being, whether that means keeping up with their kids, feeling sharper at work, or just feeling great each morning.

Take, for example, the story of Lisa, a mom of two who juggles a demanding job, family responsibilities, and her own health. She started coming in weekly, originally for neck and shoulder pain, but noticed an unexpected bonus. After a few weeks of regular adjustments, she mentioned she felt “clear-headed, energized, and much less stressed.” In her own words, “It feels like I’m not just surviving the week—I’m thriving through it!” Lisa’s story is one we hear often, and it’s what chiropractic is truly about: helping you feel your best, day in and day out, by supporting the natural healing power of your nervous system.

Consider John, an avid cyclist who loves long rides on the weekends. After coming in bi-weekly, he not only improved his endurance but noticed better balance, fewer cramps, and fewer injuries. With each adjustment, he could feel his body working more efficiently, responding with agility and strength to the challenges he put it through. Chiropractic didn’t just help him recover from pain; it enhanced his performance and his ability to stay active and engaged in life.

Here’s the truth: while we can’t promise to add years to your life, we can say with confidence that chiropractic care adds LIFE to your years. That “normal ache or pain” many people ignore is actually a signal that something is misaligned, restricting your nervous system from doing its best work. Just because you’re used to feeling that way doesn’t mean it’s normal. Your body is designed to function optimally, not merely get by, and regular chiropractic check-ups are like a tune-up for your nervous system, allowing it to communicate, heal, and energize at its peak.

Imagine a life where you wake up with energy, flexibility, and mental clarity, free from the “normal” aches and discomfort that hold so many people back. It’s why we’re here—to help you experience that life. By making chiropractic care a regular part of your routine, you’re not only addressing today’s issues but empowering yourself to prevent future ones, building a foundation for a longer, healthier, and more joyful life.

So why wait for a problem to arise? Come in weekly or twice-monthly and give your body the gift of ongoing health. Let’s work together to unlock the best version of you—vibrant, resilient, and ready for all that life has to offer.

And Now A FEW LAUGHS>>>

And Now A Prayer

Heavenly Father,

As we enter this season of gratitude, I lift up each of my patients to You in prayer. Thank You, Lord, for the opportunity to care for them, to share in their journeys toward health and healing, and to witness the miraculous ways You work in their lives. I ask that You bless them with renewed strength, peace, and joy this month. May their bodies be resilient, their hearts be light, and their spirits be uplifted by Your presence.

Guide each of us to make wise choices that honor the bodies You have entrusted to us. Help us seek the natural, the wholesome, and the life-giving in all areas of our lives. And as we gather with family and friends, let us remember Your love and grace, filling us with a spirit of gratitude for every good thing that comes from You.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

May this prayer bring you comfort and encouragement throughout the month. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers always.

In Health and Faith,

Dr. Jay, Kim and Kerrie
