Why Does My Subluxation Keep Returning?

If there were a championship belt for “Most Frequently Asked Question in the Office,” this one would win by knockout every single week. I hear it from longtime patients, brand-new patients, and even from other chiropractors when they sneak in for care:

“Jay… why does my subluxation keep coming back?”

Great question. Let’s break it down with a blend of science, common sense, and a little humor, because if we can’t laugh at how stress ties our spine into balloon animals, what are we even doing?

First, what exactly is a subluxation?

A subluxation is a misalignment in a spinal joint that interferes with the way your brain communicates with the rest of your body via the nervous system.

Think of your spine like a circuit breaker panel. When a circuit trips, the lights don’t turn off at the bulb, they turn off at the breaker. An adjustment doesn’t “treat” the bulb, it resets the breaker so the entire system works again.

Simple. Elegant. God-designed.

Now… why does it keep returning?

You’ve got three big culprits, and they gang up on your spine all week long:

1. Gravity - The Ultimate Equal Opportunity Offender

Gravity never takes a day off.Never calls in sick.Never takes a vacation.

Every second you are awake, gravity is pulling you downward, compressing you, twisting you, and arguing with your posture. If you stand, gravity loads your joints. If you sit, gravity loads your joints. If you slouch on the couch watching Netflix… well, gravity LOVES that.

Gravity wins every time.

2. Repeating the Same Habits That Caused the Problem

This is where it gets funny… and true. Most people leave my office feeling amazing. Their posture is better, their nervous system is firing, and they say things like:

“I feel ten years younger!”“My neck finally moves again!”“I feel taller!”

Then… what do they do?

They get in the car, crank their head sideways like an owl to check a blind spot, text with the phone on their lap, sleep on a pillow shaped like a marshmallow, sit at a desk designed by medieval torture engineers, and wonder why the subluxation returns.

It’s not magic. It’s mechanics.

If a tire keeps misaligning because you drive over the same pothole every day, you don’t blame the mechanic. You fix the road.

3. Stress - The Invisible Chiropractor’s Arch-Nemesis

Your spine is the scoreboard for your stress level.Mental, Physical and Chemical stress tightens muscles.Muscle tension pulls bones out of alignment.Vertebra that are out of alignment are called subluxations.Subluxations Interfere with the function of nerves.

If you’ve had a rough week, your back will tattle on you before you even open your mouth. I can see it the second we check your posture and I can feel it the second you lie down on the table. The Thermal Scan displayed the patterns of muscle tightness on the screen at your first visit. And now, through more advanced technology available in the office, the PulStar scan can show you areas of muscle tightness and subluxated vertebra on each visit AND it can even gently adjust those vertebra and show you proof of the correction on a re-scan.

The bottom line is that the body keeps the receipts of the stress it undergoes on a daily basis..

“But I was just adjusted last week and it was perfect!”

Yes. Exactly. That’s how you know the system works.

The purpose of an adjustment is not to make your spine perfect forever. If that were possible, I’d adjust you once, send you home with a pat on the back, and ride off into the sunset like a chiropractic cowboy.

An adjustment resets the nervous system so you function at your best TODAY.Life then happens.Stress happens.Gravity happens.Old patterns creep back in.

And guess what?

Sometimes the worst part about an adjustment is that you feel so good and function so well afterwards that you become more acutely aware of when you’re not feeling your best or functioning optimally.

So why weekly? Easy.

Because life is a constant stress factory, and your nervous system is your control center. If you want that system firing clean, clear, and at full power, you reset it regularly.

I get adjusted weekly,  not because I’m broken, but because I want to function at my best. Clearer mind. Better movement. Better sleep. Faster healing. Healthier body. Better adaptability. Stronger immune system.

It’s not overkill. It’s maintenance of one of the most intricate and complex systems God ever designed.

The fact is that you need to brush your teeth daily, you need to sleep daily, you should shower daily, you should eat and drink daily, you should exercise 3x a week and you should get your spine checked weekly.

Here’s the truth:

A returning subluxation is not a failure.  It’s not that you necessarily did anything wrong and it’s not that I didn’t fully correct your spine when you were in the office.

It is simply your body saying:

“Hey… life just happened again. Let’s get back on track.”

And that’s exactly why I’ll be waiting for you in Room 1, 2 or 3 at Bright Light Chiropractic. You can be confident that I’ll be prepared to check you for subluxations and correct them to the best of my abilities each and every week.

Together, we keep your nervous system clear so your body can keep doing what God created it to do… heal, repair, regenerate, and thrive.

PulStar Training In Nashville

The PulStar is one of the most advanced pieces of chiropractic technology available today, and I’m blessed to have it right here in the office. Instead of relying on twisting, popping, or cracking, the PulStar uses precise computerized analysis to identify exactly where each spinal segment is not moving the way it should. It then delivers gentle, measured, scientific impulses that guide the joint back into proper motion without force, without noise, and without any of the sensations that make sensitive patients nervous. It’s perfect for anyone who wants the benefits of a clean, specific adjustment but prefers a calmer, more comfortable experience.

This month, I’ll be traveling just north of Nashville, Tennessee on December 14th and 15th to train on brand-new features the PulStar is now capable of. One of the most exciting updates is how seamlessly it integrates with the Zone Technique, allowing the instrument to help balance the body’s neurological centers with even greater accuracy. I’m always working to bring the most advanced, gentle, and effective chiropractic care back home to Bright Light, and I can’t wait to share these improvements with you.

And Now, Even Though You Skipped Those AWESOME handwritten articles that I slaved over,... what you were waiting for... Something Funny

And Now A Prayer

Father, as we step into this season of light, hope, and holy expectation, I lift up every person who walks through the doors of Bright Light Chiropractic. May Your presence rest upon their homes, their hearts, and the work of their hands. Let this month be one where they feel Your nearness in new ways, where clarity replaces confusion, peace settles over stress, and joy becomes their natural response to each day.

Lord, guide their decisions, strengthen their faith, and remind them that they are never walking alone. Surround their families with protection and wisdom, and stir up in them a hunger for the things that truly matter. Help them end this year with gratitude for Your goodness and begin the next with confidence that Your plans for them are both purposeful and full of promise.

Bless them with renewal, alignment, and a deeper awareness of Your love. And let every step they take this month bring them closer to You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

In Health and Faith,

Dr. Jay, Kim, Kerrie, Tammie and Lori
